In our mission to support women holistically, we provide low-cost TENS hire to the community, and for free to women who we support as their doulas.
What’s a TENS machine?
TENS stands for ‘transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation’ and is a small handheld device that some women choose to use during labour (or during their period) as a form of pain relief. It works on the basis of the electrical impulses generated by the TENS machine interrupting and blocking pain messages sent to the brain.
Is it right for me?
Only you know that! If it feels right then it is right. If it doesn’t, or you don’t feel drawn to it, or it doesn’t feel good, then it’s not! This rule can be applied to everything, not just using TENS machines!
The feeling of having a collection of “stuff” helps some women to prepare emotionally and practically for labour and birth. You birth as you live, so if this is how you approach things in your day-to-day life it’s likely that this is how you will approach birth.
How much does it cost?
TENS hire is £25 for 6 weeks, which includes new pads and fully charged batteries. We also ask for a £30 deposit for hiring the TENS machine, this would be used to replace or repair the machine if needed, and deductions will be taken from your deposit if it is returned late. Once the machine is returned to us in the same condition it went out then the full £30 deposit will be returned to you.
Collection will be from Bury – it will be your responsibility to collect and return the TENS machine.
